IMTC WEST 2011 was the first MT conference to bring to the largest Money Transfer Market in the United States, California, a conference and trade fair designed for the Mexican, Central American and Asian MT Markets. The Conference brought together individuals and institutions providing international money transfer services to the millions of migrants in the United States and Canada.
Few people know that the largest amount of remittances sent every day from the US and Canada goes to Asia. India, the largest recipient of remittances in the world (56 B), is closely followed by China (51 B). With other Asian countries such as The Philippines (21 B), Bangladesh (11 B), Vietnam (7.3 B) and Indonesia (7.1 B), this region receives 55% of the world's remittance volume. On the other hand Mexico receives around 23 B – third in the world –Guatemala receives 4.3 B, El Salvador 3.6 B and Honduras 2.6 B.
Asian countries are very large in terms of population and GDP compared to the Central America Countries so the impact of remittances is quite large in small countries such as Honduras where almost 20% of the GDP comes from remittances alone, while in El Salvador is 16% and in Guatemala is 10%.
You can see from the graph the size of these markets. Visit MT Profiles for different countries here.
IMTC WEST 2011 brought experts and company representatives of the MT industry to discuss and analyze the trends and major issues and to network and explore new business opportunities from MT institutions as well as the providers of services for the industry.
Only the large Money Transfer Companies such as Western Union and Moneygram have made a determined effort to serve both the Asian MT and the Latin American MT markets. Banking Institutions such as Wells Fargo have also opened up to serving both Hispanics and Asians. Other medium to large MT companies such as Ria Envia, Coinstar, have recently have made efforts to move from hispanic-only markets to increase thier presence, serving the Asian MT markets.
This decade will see a number of companies looking to expand and acquire companies in order to serve those two markets as well as the Middle East and Africa, growing markets as well. The International P2P (Person -to-Person) payment market is soon to explode with more and more technology driven innovations come into the market.
